This study examines three possible approaches to improving the speed in generating wind-optimal routes for air traffic at the national or global level. They are: (a) using the resources of a supercomputer, (b) running the computations on multiple commercially available computers and (c) implementing those same algorithms into NASAs Future ATM Concepts Evaluation Tool (FACET) and compares those to a standard implementation run on a single CPU. Wind-optimal aircraft trajectories are computed...

Current statistical speech translation approaches predominantly rely on just text transcripts and do not adequately utilize the rich contextual information such as prosody and discourse function that are conveyed beyond words and syntax. In this talk I will introduce a novel framework for enriching speech translation with prosodic prominence and dialog acts. Our approach of incorporating rich information in speech translation is motivated by the fact that it is important to capture and convey...

The Dynamic Weather Routes (DWR) tool is a ground-based trajectory automation system that continuously and automatically analyzes active in-flight aircraft in en route airspace to find simple modifications to flight plan routes that can save significant flying time, while avoiding weather and considering traffic conflicts, airspace sector congestion, special use airspace, and FAA routing restrictions. Trials of the DWR system have shown that significant delay savings are possible. However, some...

An algorithm is suggested to obtain the Luenberger canonical form for multivariable systems. The method computes the canonical form directly without having to compute the transformation matrix. In addition, there is a large reduction in the number of calculations. The reduced computations along with Gaussian techniques lend to greater inherent accuracy and the ability to refine the solution with additional computations.

Warfighters are often subjected to challenging sleep/wake schedules that hinder their cognitive performance. Countermeasures, such as timely short naps and caffeine, are often used to mitigate the effects of sleep loss on performance. However, the timing, duration, and dosage of these countermeasures should be optimal (or near optimal) to maintain high levels of performance at the desired times. To this end, mathematical models that can accurately predict the detrimental effects of sleep loss...

Air traffic in the North Atlantic oceanic airspace (NAT) experiences very strong winds caused by jet streams. Flying wind-optimal trajectories increases individual flight efficiency, which is advantageous when operating in the NAT. However, as the NAT is highly congested during peak hours, a large number of potential conflicts between flights are detected for the sets of wind-optimal trajectories. Conflict resolution performed at the strategic level of flight planning can significantly reduce...

We consider the channel ronting problem of a set of multi-terminal nets in the knock-knee model. We develop a new approach to route all the nets within d+ alpha tracks, where d is the channel density, and 0 alpha d, such that the corresponding layout can be realized with three layers. Both the routing and the layer assignment algorithms have linear time sequential implementations. In addition both can be implemented on the CREW-PRAM model in 0(n/p + logn) time, with p processors, 1 p n, and n...

The formation of large protein crystals of "high quality" is considered a characteristic manifestation of microgravity. The physical processes that predict the formation of large, high quality protein crystals in the microgravity environment of space are considered rooted in the existence of a "depletion zone" in the vicinity of crystal. Namely, it is considered reasonable that crystal quality suffers in earth-grown crystals as a result of the incorporation of large...

Jordan canonical forms are used extensively in the literature on control systems. However, very few methods are available to compute them numerically. Most numerical methods compute a set of basis vectors in terms of which the given matrix is diagonalized when such a change of basis is possible. Here, a simple and efficient method is suggested for computing the Jordan canonical form and the corresponding transformation matrix. The method is based on the definition of a generalized eigenvector,...

This paper describes a class of strategies for reducing persistent contrail formation in the United States airspace. The primary objective is to minimize potential contrail formation regions by altering the aircraft's cruising altitude in a fuel-efficient way. The results show that the contrail formations can be reduced significantly without extra fuel consumption and without adversely affecting congestion in the airspace. The contrail formations can be further reduced by using extra fuel. For...

The loosely coordinated sets of traffic flow management initiatives that are operationally implemented at the national- and local-levels have the potential to under, over, and inconsistently control flights. This study is designed to explore these interactions through fast-time simulations with an emphasis on identifying inequitable situations in which flights receive multiple uncoordinated delays. Two operationally derived scenarios were considered in which flights arriving into the...

It is shown that for a controllable, linear time invariant multivariable system at least max (m,p) poles can be assigned arbitrarily. In certain cases more than max (m,p) oikes can be assigned. This result is particularly useful in designing systems for high integrity in the event of transducer failure. In such an event this design takes advantage of the unequal number of inputs and outputs so as to assure no loss in pole assignability.

Given a linear time invariant multivariable system with m inputs and p outputs, it was shown that p closed loop poles of the system can be preassigned arbitrarily using constant gain output feedback provided (A circumflex, B circumflex) is controllable. These data show that if (A circumflex, B circumflex, C circumflex) is controllable and observable, and Rank B circumflex = m, Rank C circumflex = p, then max (m,p) poles of the system can be assigned arbitarily using constant gain output...

Knowledge of the three-dimensional world is essential for many guidance and navigation applications. A sequence of images from an electro-optical sensor can be processed using optical flow algorithms to provide a sparse set of ranges as a function of azimuth and elevation. A natural way to enhance the range map is by interpolation. However, this should be undertaken with care since interpolation assumes continuity of range. The range is continuous in certain parts of the image and can jump at...

In quiescent environments (microgravity, capillary tubes, gels) formation of a depletion zone is to be expected, due either to limited sedimentation, density driven convection or a combination of both. The formation of a depletion zone can: Modify solution supersaturation near crystal; Give rise to impurity partitioning. It is conjectured that both supersaturation and impurity partitioning affect protein crystal quality and size. Further detailed investigations on various proteins are needed to...
